A principios de diciembre este año de gracia

aquí, en New England, la cara arrugada de la tierra
está tiesa y congelada, como si una muerte
dolorosa y súbita la hubiese golpeado tanto.
No hay signos de la nieve aún

Casi puedo pensar que alguna batalla aquí
fue peleada, y tendió cuerpos destrozados,
congelados e inmundos, bajo la triste
mirada del sol, la luna, el cielo
quien aún, por esto, olvida la nieve.
Pero Dios es puntual, y la nieve vendrá
(y la paz vendrá, dijo el corazón del mundo),
y la tierra esconderá su molesta
cara de desesperación, semblanza de muerte.
Pero este helado horror que conocemos
seguirá siendo terrible aún, bajo la nieve
(la paz será terrible, dijo el corazón del mundo).
